CARLSBAD, Calif. (June 20, 2014) -- Xander Schauffele and Beau Hossler both won two matches Friday and will play for the crown Saturday at the 103rd California State Amateur Championship at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
Schauffele the No. 8 seed, who recently completed his unior season at San Diego State, knocked off No. 16 Sydney Wolf in Friday morning's quarterfinals. Wolf had previously beaten top seed and stroke-play qualifying medalist Jason Anthony in the second round.
Schauffele's success would continue in the afternoon semifinals when he knocked off No. 4 seed Paul Smith, 2 up, to move to Saturday's finale.
Hossler, who plays his college golf at the University of Texas, entered the match-play competition as the No. 2 seed. He cruised through his first two matches and showed he can win tight ones as well on Friday.
Hossler beat USC's Lorens Chan in 24 holes in the morning quarterfinal before prevailing over No. 22 Matt Hansen in 19 holes in the semifinals. Hossler, a 2012 U.S. Open qualifier, hopes to continue his strong play in what should undoubtedly be a highly-competitive match on Saturday.
The 36-hole championship match is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. AmateurGolf.com will have full coverage of the final event from La Costa
