California goes way low to lead Alister MacKenzie Invite

FAIRFAX, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2018) – Scores were low on the opening day of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. They were so low that host California is 36 under after 36 holes. The Bears lead by six at Meadow Club.

California posted a remarkable 26-under 258 on the par-71 track in the morning round. It set a new school record Five of the six players in the lineup (the tournament is a play-six-count-four format) turned in rounds in the 60s. Among Cal’s four counters, there were three eagles (those all came from Sebastian Crampton) and 28 birdies. Crampton had a 63, but so did Kaiwen Liu, and his was bogey-free. Crampton didn’t have a bogey either but did have a double-bogey at the par-4 sixth.

Crampton, who followed with 67 in the afternoon, is second individually behind teammate Collin Morikawa, who contributed rounds of 65-64 and is 13 under.

While not as low as its morning total, California’s 10-under 274 in the afternoon was nothing to scoff at.

Pepperdine kept pace with rounds of 270-268 for a 30-under total. San Jose State is next at 21 under. The Spartans had the second-best score of the morning, a 15-under 269.

Arizona State is fourth at 15 under and San Francisco and UC Davis are tied for fifth at 13 under. Eleven of the 15 teams in the field are under par after two rounds.
