HATTIESBURG, Miss. (July 10, 2015) – The first round of the 4th annual Magnolia Amateur is underway at Hattiesburg Country Club.
Leading the way with a 3-under 67 is Bryce Alley of Longview, Texas. The UTSA junior tallied four birdies and only one bogey on the card.
"I've been playing pretty well coming into this week," Alley told the Hattiesburg American. "It didn't really come as a surprise, but it felt really good out there."
Alley has a one shot lead over Australian Kade McBride and is two shots clear of five players tied at 1-under par. One of the players at 1-under is University of Alabama golfer Steve Setterstrom who was content with his play considering the tough course set up.
"The pins were tough," Setterstrom said to the Hattiesburg American. "It felt like Sunday pins, instead of the first round. And 17 really shouldn't be a par-4, but I got up and down there. I made a 10-footer for par, but it felt like a birdie."
Players will be repaired based on score for the second round, with Alley, Mcbride and Parks Brown teeing off at 2:30pm local time. The 144-player field will be cut to the low 72 players following the conclusion of Saturday’s round.
