Brennan completes rare three-peat at Middle Atlantic Amateur

Michael Brennan, a teen from Leesburg, Va., hasn't been beaten at the Middle Atlantic Amateur for three years.

If a title defense is unusual in today’s amateur golf climate, then a three-peat is almost unheard of. Against all odds, Brennan, the 17-year-old from Leesburg, Va., finished 72 holes at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Va., with a 10-over total and won the Middle Atlantic Amateur by 10 shots. This is Brennan’s third consecutive title in the event. He was just 15 years old when he won for the first time. He became the event’s youngest winner that year.

Brennan didn’t leave a lot of doubt about what he was after when he opened the week with a 4-under 68. Even after three more rounds, it remained the lowest round of the tournament. His closing 2-under 70 was one of just three under-par rounds for the week from any player.

All told, Brennan posted rounds of 68-77-75-70 for his 1-under total. He had the low score of the day in the first and final rounds.

The Middle Atlantic Amateur title is the latest accomplishment in a strong year for Brennan. He won the Scott Robertson Memorial, an elite junior event, in the spring. He competed in the Amateur Championship at Portmarnock in Ireland before returning to Virginia and winning the VSGA Amateur the next week. He was runner-up in VSGA Stroke Play a month later.

Behind Brennan, Michael Brown of Maple Shade Township, Pa., was 13 over and runner-up. Jake Griffin of Kensington, Md., finished third at 16 over and Jeffrey Long of Ashburn, Va., was fourth another three shots back.
