Zac Gould, Mark Trow and Adam Runcie won three of the opening four singles matches for Wales this afternoon, but England's playing captain Tom Sherreard stemmed the tide and got great support from Ben Parker and new caps Tom Haylock, James Watts and Sam Hutsby to secure victory.
Rhys Enoch and Marc Lewis were the other winners for Wales, who had beaten both Ireland and Scotland by an 8-7 margin on the opening two days, but the loss to England left them with only a shared victory with Scotland in 1992 on the honours board.
Scotland clinched third place with their only win of the series against Ireland, sharing the singles at five matches each after gaining a two-point advantage in the morning foursomes for an 8-6 margin with one match halved. On the first two days they lost to England by 10-5 and to Wales by 8-7. Scotland won the event in 1987, 1990 and 1995 and shared the title with Wales in 1992.
Ireland finished without a victory, losing by a 8-7 to Wales and by 9-6 to England. When the R&A Trophy was first presented to the winning team in 1985, Ireland shared the honours with England before winning outright the following year and again in 1997.
