DUNROBIN, Ontairo (August 8, 2016) -- Blair Bursey fired a first round, bogey-free 8-under 64 to take the first round lead at the 2016 Canadian Amateur. Bursey will carry a three-stroke lead over three others into the second round as he switches to The Royal Ottawa Golf Club for his second round after playing Eagle Creek Golf Club on Monday.
Bursey, a rising junior at at Utah Valley, birdied only two holes on the front nine before getting on a back nine roll. The run started with a birdie on the 10th and continued with birdies on Nos. 12, 15 and 16. Following a par on the 17th Bursey concluded his round with an eagle on the par-5 18th.
The group tied for second is comprised of Marco Trstenjak, Josh Whalen (Kent State) and Andy Zhang (Florida Commit). All three players competed at Eagle Creek G.C. and shot 5-under 67's. Trstenjak made his way around in bogey-free fashion while both Whalen and Zhang bogeyed just once.
Andrew Harrison (University of British Columbia) and Nicholas Ross (Eastern Michigan) share fifth at 4-under.
On day one Eagle Creek proved to be the easier of the two courses as 22 players tied for 17th or better played the track. The best score at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club was Steven Diack (Wayland Baptist) who shot a 2-under 68. Diack is tied for ninth.
Other notable scores include the even-par tied for 26th round produced by Garrett Rank and Jarred du Toit's 1-over 71 which leaves him tied for 45th.
Rank played The Royal Ottawa Golf Club while du Toit played Eagle Creek.
