Barry continues to lead D-II championships after round 2

KISSIMMEE, Florida (May 23, 2017) – Barry built on their strong first round to increase their lead from two strokes to four strokes over second place West Florida. At the end of the second round, Florida Southern’s John Coultas remained in the lead on the individual leaderboard with a score of -6 134. Although they shot a higher score in round two (278 compared to 274) Barry was able to capitalize on the struggles of the rest of the field of the NCAA Division II Championship. With Barry’s struggles, West Florida also shot four strokes more increasing their deficit to four strokes. Even with the efforts of Shanren Brienen, one of the few players who decreased his score in the second round, Florida Tech was unable to gain ground on Barry.On the individual leaderboard, John Coultas remained on top after 36 holes. The junior from Florida Southern shot a -1 69. It was an impressive round for Coultas who recorded an Eagle on hole No. 2, a 364 par-4. He also did not record a bogey on the front nine. Not to mention he only recorded two bogies, holes No. 10 and No. 14. Niclas Weiland of Barry finished the round in second shooting a 67 which put him at -5 135. Chandler Blanchet had an impressive round as well, going from 17th place to a tie for 3rd firing a round high 66. Mike Anderson of Barry and John Clare of Le Moyne College also tied for third with Blanchet – all with scores of -4. "I hit it much better today and kept it in the fairway which gave me a couple more opportunities to hit it closer to the hole and make a few more birdie putts," said Blanchet in an UWF athletics press release. Blanchet is a junior from Gainesville, who is attempting to become just the second UWF player to win the NCAA individual title. The final stroke play round is set to commence Wednesday morning. The individual NCAA Division II champion will then be crowned, and the top 8 teams will advance to single elimination match play to determine the team champion.
