ASU Thunberbird Invite: UNLV edges No. 1 Cal for title

UNLV posts 11-under on the final day, as the No. 1 Cal Bears see their back nine lead slip away

TEMPE, Arizona (April 7, 2013) -- Top-ranked California watched its back-nine lead slip away on Sunday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, as UNLV rallied to a one-shot victory over the Golden Bears. Cal has won eight times in the 2012-13 season, two off what is believed to be the all-time record. UNLV was paced by Kurt Kitayama and Kevin Penner, both who finished at 6 under for the tournament, while Carl Jonson was 1 over and Nicholas Maruri at 5 over. Cal's Michael Kim finished outside the top 10 for the first time this season, picking up a T-11 finish at 1 under for the tournament. Oregon State's Nick Chianello won medalist honors at 11-under, clearing Iowa State's Scott Fernandez and Cal's Brandon Hagy by a single stroke.
