Arizona State captures fifth victory of Spring with win at host tournament

The Sun Devils ran away with a 25-shot win at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, with junior Jon Rahm leading the way

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State's men's golf team has been red-hot all spring, winning four times already before their host event, the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. So it's no surprise that they added a fifth win to their incredible total, winning by 25 shots at Karsten Golf Course on Saturday. The two players who have led the squad all season, juniors Jon Rahm and Max Rottluff, paced the Sun Devils to the huge margin of victory, with Rahm grabbing the individual title at fifteen-under par 195. Rahm, of Spain, went 65-64-66 at Karsten while Rottluff, of Germany, posted 66-63-67 to take second place just a stroke behind. The two finished ten and nine shots ahead of the next best player. Second-place finishing Iowa State was led by their own international player, Nick Voke of New Zealand. He carded 68-69-68 to grab the third place spot. Having played in six events in the Spring, Arizona State's five wins have been most impressive. Their highest quality first-place finishes came in Hawaii at the Amer Ari Invitational and in the desert at The Prestige at PGA West. The individual win is the second for Rahm, having just added the Oregon Duck Invitational to his resume two weeks earlier. The team will tee it up next week at the Western Intercollegiate, their last event before the Pac-12 Championship in Washington at the end of April.
