Both players matched pars on the first five playoff holes at East Lake Golf Club before the matter was decided with a birdie by Lee on the par-3 11th. The playoff took place on holes 10 and 11, with each hole being played three-times.
"It was definitely hard to play against your teammate in a collegiate match," Lee told Golf Channel. "We were both having fun and at the end of the day I am happy with the way things came out but also a little sad (for Casey)."
Lee posted her 4-under 68 with a seven birdie, three bogey day. The freshman needed to rally late to match Danielson and she did with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Her final hole birdie was a downhill left-to-righter. For Lee, a finalist in the 2016 U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship, it was her second individual win of the fall.
Danielson, a senior, was looking for her first individual championship and she led for much of the day. Through 14-holes, Danielson was 5-under but a bogey on No. 17 dropped her back to 4-under. Danielson had an opportunity to win on the 18th but had to settle for par.
Duke's Leona Maguire and UCLA's Bronte Law shared third at 2-under while UCLA's Mariel Galdiano, Duke's Sandy Choi and Stanford's Shannon Aubert were tied for fifth at 1-under.
Not only was an individual winner crowned on Monday but the seeds were set for the next two days of match play. The semifinals matches for Tuesday are as follows:
No. 1 Stanford (-6) vs. No. 4 Washington (+28)No. 2 UCLA (-1) vs. No. 3 Duke (+2)
The winning teams will meet in the championship match Wednesday and the two losers will square off in a consolation match.
