WAIKOLOA, HI (Feb. 7, 2013) -- TCU, No. 16 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, and seventh-ranked UCLA shot 11-under 277 Wednesday at Waikoloa’s Kings Course to hold the first-round lead at the Amer Ari Invitational.
TCU also holds the top two spots on the leaderboard. Daniel Jennevret shot a first-round 67 to hold a one-shot lead over nine players: his TCU teammate Eli Cole; UCLA’s Pedro Figueiredo, Manav Shah and Pontus Widegren; Oregon State’s David Fink, Texas Tech’s Clement Sordet, Oregon’s Jonathan Woo and Washington’s Chris Williams. Williams is the world’s No. 1 amateur according to the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking. Jennevret made seven birdies and two bogeys Wednesday.
TCU is coming off a second-place finish at its first event of the spring season, the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Frogs finished just two shots back of New Mexico.
No. 2 Texas is in third place, two shots behind the co-leaders, after a 9-under 279. Texas’ Brandon Stone is T-10 after shooting a first-round 69; he is No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. Cody Gribble also shot 69 Wednesday for the Longhorns.
Washington, No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, is another shot back. Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan is tied for 14th after shooting a first-round 70; Pan, the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings after the fall season, is now ranked second after being passed by Cal’s Michael Kim.
