Alabama maintains slim lead at SEC Championship

Sunday should prove to be quite the shootout at Sea Island as Alabama, LSU, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and many others fight for the title

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — Scoring continued to be impressive at Sea Island Golf Club as the SEC Championship finished its second round of play. And with five teams within 11 shots of the lead, Sunday's final round should shape up to be quite the shootout. Alabama, who held a five-shot lead after day one, will take a three-shot advantage into Sunday after the Crimson Tide fired six-under 274 on Saturday. The team's star sophomore Robby Shelton led the squad again with his second straight round of 65. He sits one back of South Carolina's Matt NeSmith for the individual title. NeSmith and his Gamecocks are just seven shots back in a tie for third place with Vanderbilt. NeSmith shot 64 on day two after sharing the lead with Shelton and Kolton Crawford of Arkansas at 65 on Friday. The lowest team round of the day went to LSU, who sits three behind Alabama after an eight-under performance on Saturday. Junior Zach Wright led the way with 66, while sophomore Brandon Pierce and senior Stewart Jolly posted 68s. Auburn (5th) and Arkansas (6th) are not out of it either at nine-under and six-under through the first two rounds.
