Akabane runs away with top seed at California Women's Am

Ty Akabane finished seven shots ahead of the next-best player in stroke-play qualifying at the California Women's Amateur

Ty Akabane, a high school senior, has secured the top spot on the match-play bracket as head-to-head competition begins in the California Women's Amateur Championship. Akabane carded 4-under 68 at Quail Lodge Golf Club, which left her at 9-under 135 at the end of the stroke-play portion of the championship. That was seven shots better than the rest of the field.

Elizabeth Schultz of Walnut Creek finished second and earned the No. 2 seed on the bracket. Schultz came in at 142 after a second-round 70.

Madelyn Gamble of Pleasant Hill and Andrea Gomez of Santa Clara finished T-3 at 143 after rounds of 70 and 73, respectively. Gamble made it to match play at last week’s U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Poppy Hills GC.

Ashely Shim of San Mateo, who also advanced to match play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior, will be the No. 5 seed.

The cutline for match play (low 32) came at 11-over 155.

Thursday’s action will see the both the Round of 32 and Round of 16, while Friday’s play will consist of the quarterfinals and semifinals. Saturday’s championship finale will be 18 holes.
