Ahern leads Connecticut Mid-Am with only round in the red

Brian Ahern opened with 1-under 71 Monday as he looks to add a third Connecticut Mid-Am title to his resume

DANBURY, Conn. (Aug. 27, 2018) – Brian Ahern has the early lead at the Connecticut Mid-Amateur. In fact, Ahearn was the only player in the field to break par Monday at Richter Park Golf Course.

Ahern, who plays out of Wampanoag Country Club, had two birdies and a bogey on his way to 1-under 71. The West Hartford, Conn., resident is a past champion in this event, having won in 2010 and 2012. Already this summer, Ahern won the Palmer Cup and reached the Connecticut Amateur semifinals.

Five players are tied for second at even par right behind Ahern. Ben Conroy, the 2018 Connecticut Amateur Champion who lost last year’s Mid-Amateur Championship to Mike Kennedy in a playoff, opened his day with a double bogey, but managed to fight his way back to even par.

Bill Hermanson, who won this event from 1990 through 1993 and again in 2001, and Glen Boggini, the 2014 Public Links Champion who recently qualified for September’s U.S. Mid-Amateur, both bogeyed their final hole of the day drop out of a share of the lead. Dan Murphy and Ryan Garrity are also tied for second at even par.

Defending champion Mike Kennedy missed the cut with a 7-over 79.
