STATESBORO, Ga. (March 16, 2014) -- Junior Scott Wolfes' 68 on the final day of the Schenkel Invitational helped seal the tournament for host Georgia Southern, but it was a pair of aces on Saturday that gave the team serious momentum.
Georgia Southern finished at 14-under 850 at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga., Sunday, beating out runner-up Alabama-Birmingham by eight strokes.
Wolfes finished as the medalist at 7 under, but senior roommates Hayden Anderson and Will Evans share shot-of-the-week honors.
Both players recorded aces on Saturday. Evans hit a pitching wedge at the 130-yard hole No. 6, and Anderson wielded a 5-iron on the 198-yard 13th for his hole-in-one.
"To have two senior roommates have a hole-in-one on the same day at the Schenkel is unbelievable," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays in a release. "It's really indescribable."
On Sunday, Wolfes recorded seven total birdies, but had two straight bogeys to finish his round. UAB sophomore Martin Rohwer placed second at 5 under and Virginia freshman Jimmy Stanger rounded out the top three at 4 under.
The top five included Georgia Southern at 14 under, UAB at 6 under, Central Florida at 2 under and Virginia and Texas tied at 4 over.
“Georgia Southern had a spectacular week,” UAB head coach Alan Murray said in a release. “It was a home week for Georgia Southern. I was really proud of our guys, they tried really hard. We did a lot of things well.”
The win was Georgia Southern's first on the year.
