A playoff eagle helps Devin Tovey complete a hometown dream at Bonneville Golf Course
Two years after narrowly missing out on the title, Devin Tovey finally captured the Richard C. Kramer Salt Lake City Amateur Championship, winning in a dramatic fashion at Bonneville Golf Course.
The 32-year-old Salt Lake City native posted rounds of 68 and 70 to finish at 6-under 138, matching Kenny Palmer and forcing a sudden-death playoff.
Palmer, 40, opened the tournament with a scorching 8-under 64 before closing with a 74 to also finish at 138. The pair returned to the par-5 first hole to decide the championship.
There, Tovey produced the shot of the tournament. The former Cameron University golfer hit a 9-iron from 164 yards to within five feet of the pin. Palmer's approach spun off the green, leaving him unable to match Tovey's opportunity. Tovey calmly converted the eagle putt to secure the title.
A club fitter at Impact Golf Center in Draper and a part-time employee at Bonneville, Tovey has long viewed the Salt Lake City Amateur as one of Utah's premier championships.
Nikko Taggart (65-74) finished third at 5-under after birdieing the 18th hole, while Hayden Howell (71-69) and Daniel Holmberg (70-70) shared fourth at 4-under.
For Tovey, the victory was especially sweet after finishing one shot short of the title two years ago.

One of the most popular tournaments in Utah that always fills up quickly. Most of the state’s top amateurs will be in the 100-player championship flight, with another 100 or so in the A and B flights. 36 holes of stroke play.
