The Danish amateur survives a late rally from Elizabeth Wilson to capture the Spanish Women's Amateur title at Sotogrande
Denmark’s Sarah Skovgaard Bils captured the 108th Copa S.M. La Reina – Spanish Women’s Amateur Championship, defeating England’s Elizabeth Wilson 1 up in a tense final at La Reserva Club in Sotogrande.
The 23-year-old Dane appeared in control after building a 4-up lead, but Wilson mounted a late rally that pushed the match to the 18th hole, where Bils held her nerve to close it out and secure one of Europe’s most prestigious amateur titles.
The championship week was heavily affected by persistent rain during the early rounds, forcing organizers to shorten the tournament format. The match-play bracket was reduced to 32 players instead of the traditional 64, with the cut after stroke play adjusted accordingly before the knockout stage began.
Bils’ path to the trophy featured several demanding matches. She opened match play with a 2 & 1 victory over Italy’s Natalia Aparicio in the round of 32. In the round of 16, she survived a marathon battle against Austria’s Katrina Bulkovska, eventually winning on the 21st hole.
The Dane, who is a graduate of Washington State University, then delivered one of the most dominant performances of the quarterfinal round, defeating Spain’s Carlota López Minguela 7 & 6 to reach the semifinals. She followed that with a composed 5 & 4 win over Italy’s Guia Vittoria Acutis, securing her place in the final.
Wilson also fought through a strong bracket. The English player defeated Carolina Pérez-Tasso 4 & 2 and Rut Díaz García 3 & 2 before edging France’s Eléa Bastoni 1 up in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
The win continues a steady rise for Bils in European amateur golf. She currently sits No. 198 in the European Golf Association Women’s Rankings and enjoyed a productive 2025 season, playing 14 ranked events and winning three times — the Danish National Match Play Championship, Dormy Elite Tour II Damer – Wiibroe Cup in June, and the Kronborg Masters in July — along with four additional top-10 finishes.
