Aggies outlast host Wildcats in a shootout at Tucson Country Club while Jones wins by three
There was a good ol' fashioned western shootout at the Tucson Country Club and at the end, Texas A&M was left standing after posting a three-shot to win the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Aggies posted a team score of 36-under 828 for the 54-hole event to claim the team title after holding off a hard-charging Arizona squad which drew to within three strokes after carding a final round 10-under 278 on its home course to finish at 33-under for the tournament.
Texas A&M and Arizona were tied with four holes remaining, but Bennett birdied three of his last four holes on his way to a 68 to lead the Aggies to their third team title of the season.
BYU's Zac Jones put together rounds of 65-69-66 to claim medalist honors at 16-under 200 to earn his first collegiate victory by three strokes over Arizona's Cal McCoy. Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan along with Arizona teammates Chaz Aurilia and Johnny Walker tied for third at 12-under while U.S. Amateur champion Sam Bennett of Texas A&M tied for sixth with teammate Phichaksn Maichon at 9-under 207.
“Zac made it look easy out there,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. "He drove the ball and putted like a machine. He hit his irons flush and seemed to land the ball on his yardage every time, but the thing that impressed me most was his composure down the stretch."
