Pettit and Martin went into the final round tied at six-under par. Pettit held a one shot lead over Martin after nine holes. Pettit birdied the par-5 10th hole to take a two shot lead that he held all the way through the back nine until the 18th hole. Martin birdied the final hole to finish one shot back while Pettit made par.
“It’s the 100th State Amateur and you want your name on that one,” Pettit said. “I have my name on it (Sam Perry Trophy) with a lot of famous players which is pretty cool. It’s something that I have dreamed of.”
Two-time defending champion Will Cannon of Birmingham carded a three-over 74 to finish into a tie for ninth place at 286.
Only five players broke par for the 72-hole championship with an average score of 76.3 for the entire field.
