17-year-old Turk Pettit wins 100th Alabama State Amateur

High school senior Turk Pettit fired an even-par 71 to win the Alabama State Amateur

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL (June 12, 2016) -- 17-year-old rising high school senior Turk Pettit of Auburn carded a final round even-par 71 on the tough Country Club of Birmingham West course to finish at six-under 278 and win the 100th Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship. Pettit won by one-stroke over rising Vanderbilt University sophomore Patrick Martin of Birmingham.

Pettit and Martin went into the final round tied at six-under par. Pettit held a one shot lead over Martin after nine holes. Pettit birdied the par-5 10th hole to take a two shot lead that he held all the way through the back nine until the 18th hole. Martin birdied the final hole to finish one shot back while Pettit made par.

“It’s the 100th State Amateur and you want your name on that one,” Pettit said. “I have my name on it (Sam Perry Trophy) with a lot of famous players which is pretty cool. It’s something that I have dreamed of.”

Two-time defending champion Will Cannon of Birmingham carded a three-over 74 to finish into a tie for ninth place at 286.

Only five players broke par for the 72-hole championship with an average score of 76.3 for the entire field.
