Zylstra Wins Ralph Bogart Memorial

Bill Zylstra of Ocklawaha, Fla., wins the younger division of the Society of Seniors’ Ralph Bogart Memorial Winter Invitational for the third time in the last four years.

JUPITER, Fla. (Dec. 3, 2010) -- Bill Zylstra of Ocklawaha, Fla., has won the younger division of the Society of Seniors’ Ralph Bogart Memorial Winter Invitational for the third time in the last four years. Zylstra was the only player to break par for the distance with a 54-hole total of one under 215 after closing at two under 70 on the Fazio course of the Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club at Old Trail. He made five birdies and three bogeys Friday. He won by five strokes as Pete Allen of Southport, N.C., was second on 71-220 in the senior division for members 55 to 64 years old. Zylstra also won his age group in 2007 at The Club at TwinEagles, Naples, and last year at Verandah Club, Fort Myers. In the super seniors division for players 65 and older, Joseph Cantrell of Louisville, Ky., won his first Society title with 74-220. Bill Dorece of Cincinnati, Ohio, the first and second round leader, slipped to fourth at 79-224. In a separate four-ball competition matching the lowest and highest scores after the first round Wednesday, the winners were Michael Rose, Huntingdon Valley, Pa., and Steve Hakes, San Diego, Calif., seniors, 136; and Walt Martin, Oakton, Va., and Tommy Thomas, Paducah, Ky., super seniors, 138. The 29th annual Bogart, the last of seven Society of Seniors tournaments this year, drew 39 seniors and 45 super seniors. Bogart, one of the founders of the Society, died in Feb. 22, 2004. The Society is an organization of senior amateur golfers 55 and older with handicaps of three or less.
