World Amateur tees off in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Aug. 27, 2012) -- One day down and three to go at the 2012 Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship. While your's truly didn't necessarily enjoy all 18 of his holes in Round 1, the day was a success. Rain and wet weather made its way through the area late in the morning but that didn't deter the 3,091 golfers fighting for the prize of World champ. The 3,091 golfers make up 68 flights ranging from 0.6-36.4 with divisions for women, men (49 and under), men's senior (50-59), mid-senior (60-69) and super senior (70 and above). The field hails from 49 states and 25 different countries. Clearly, the field is as diverse as any and it even includes one of baseball's greatest pitchers Roger Clemens, who's back for a second year. The interesting thing about this large event is that Roger has just as good of a chance to win as any of the other 3,090 golfers. Play continues at 59 area courses Tuesday in Round 2. The event's 72 net holes will be completed Thursday before flight winners play in Friday's World Amateur Championship Round at TPC Myrtle Beach.
