Women's Western Amateur: Stasi and Pressel advance

Madison Pressel and Meghan Stasi both advance at the Women's Western Amateur in Ponte Vedra, FL

PONTE VEDRA, FL (June 22, 2011) -- Of the 64 places in the Championship Flight, 50 players either played collegiate golf this past season or will enter college this fall. Top seed Madison Pressel, Boca Raton, FL,defeated Thuhashini (“Tui”) Selvaratnam, Tempe, AZ, 2 up. Selvaratnam survivedTuesday’s night’s playoff that had 6 players vying for the 5 final spots in ChampionshipFlight which earned her the right to play Pressel, whose older sister, Morgan, plays on the LPGA tour. Meghan Stasi, Oakland Park, FL, who tied for Medalist with Pressel, narrowly won her match 1 up on the 18th hole over Rachel Smith, Mansfield, TX, a 2010 Cum Laude Winthrop University graduate. 5th Seed Cyna Rodriquez defeated fellow Philippine native Daniela Uy, 4 and 3. Rodriquez, who will be a Junior at the University of Southern California this fall, also defeated Uy, 6 and 4, in the 1st round of Match Play at last year’s WWGA 110th National Amateur Championship at Rochester Country Club, Rochester, Minnesota. Uy also participated in Tuesday’s Play Off.In another match, fellow teammates from the University of Virginia faced eachother. Recent Graduate Calle Nielson, Nashville, TN, the recent winner of the Women’sSouthern Amateur Championship, defeated incoming Sophomore Melissa Edmondson,Coral Gables, FL, 4 and 3. Tomorrow morning she will face another UVA teammate and3rd seed, Brittany Altomare, Shrewsbury, MA, who defeated University of Illinois Senior,Nora Lucas, Chicago, IL, 1 up. Courtney McKim, Raleigh, NC, the 2009 Winner of the WWGA’s 83rd National Junior Championship, defeated Kaitlyn Price, Jacksonville, FL, 2 up. At one time in thematch McKim held a 5 up lead but narrowed it to 1 up on the 18th tee due to Price’sfortitude. Price is a rising Sophomore at the University of Central Florida. In other Championship Flight matches involving local Jacksonville Area players, Florida Times Union High School Player of the Year and incoming Duke University freshman Irene Jung, lost to Florida Southern College rising Senior Melanie (MJ) Audette, Lakeland, FL, 2 and 1; and University of South Carolina Senior to be Katie Burnett,Brunswick, GA, defeated Brittany Tallman, a incoming Senior at the University ofWashington from Issaquah, WA, 1 up.
