Women's Trans: Trio of collegians top crowded leaderboard

Katrina Prendergast is among the three college players leading a tightly packed Women's Trans leaderboard in California

MARYSVILLE, CA (July 11, 2018) – After two rounds at the Women’s Trans National Amateur, the leaderboard is growing tighter. A trio of players share the lead at 5 under and nine more are at even par or better.

The round of the day belonged to Rino Sasaki at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club. Sasaki, who plays college golf for the University of Washington, put together a bogey-free round of 4-under 68 that included a birdie on the final hole. It helped bump her to a share of the lead.

And it merited some ice cream – it’s how Sasaki chose to cool off and celebrate.

Sasaki joins SMU’s Kennedy Pedigo and Colorado State’s Katrina Prendergast at 5 under. Pedigo and Prendergast posted second-round scores of 70 and 69, respectively. Prendergast falls into the category of USGA champion these days after pairing with fellow Colorado State player Ellen Secor to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball in May.

First-round leader Kathleen Scavo, who is near her home of Benicia, Calif., this week, rebounded from a first-round 68 with 72 on Wednesday. She had four more bogeys in her second round, but also ended the day with a birdie at No. 18.

UCLA’s Clare Amelia Legaspi and incoming Cal freshman Katherine Zhu share fifth at 3 under. Abegail Arevalo, of the Phillipines, might have made the most promising move into contention on Wednesday. Arevalo was 3 under through her opening five holes but cooled after that. She added one more birdie and one bogey to post a 69 that moved her to solo ninth at 1 under.
