What to know (and how to find it) about the new Rules of Golf

The new Rules of Golf are here. It’s safe to say that in 2019, we’ll all have a little relearning to do when it comes to both weekend golf and tournament play. The changes to the rules were made in the name of modernization as well as speed of play, but still may cause a few headaches during the first rounds of the year.

While 34 rules used to govern play, the modernization condensed that to 24 rules, each with its own sub-rules. There rules are published in full on the USGA site for players who would like to familiarize themselves with them.

In the name of education for everyday golfers, the USGA has created ample articles, explanations and videos for its web site that should help players navigate the new rules.

The USGA also identified eight categories of rules changes that will likely have the most impact on the game. Those categories include:

Ball at rest
Ball in motion
Taking relief
Areas of the course
Equipment
Playing a ball
When to play during a round
Player behavior
