WAX WINS AMATEURGOLF.COM TORREY PINES CUP

La Jolla, CA (December 11, 2004) – Daniel Wax of Pacific Palisades, CA heated up a putter that had been cold during the first two rounds of the Inaugural amateurgolf.com Torrey Pines Cup. A few extra putts dropping, along with long tee shots and solid iron play resulted in a 4-under par 68 at the Torrey Pines North Course. Joe Johnson of Carlsbad, CA, the 36-hole leader, struggled on Saturday but his solid overall total of 104 points edged Jim Gentile of Connecticut by 1 stroke for 2nd. Gentile moved up the leaderboard on Friday and Saturday; he fired rounds of 72-71 on the Torrey Pines South and North Courses, and could have been more of a factor if not for a rusty start at Coronado G.C. on Thursday. ”I hadn’t played since before Thanksgiving, so I’m pleased to have found my game by the end of the tournament,” said Gentile. Players were treated to the second straight day of glorious sunny skies with balmy 75 degree temperatures. Wax claimed the title under the Stableford format with 110 points over three rounds in the Inaugural amateurgolf.com Torrey Pines Cup. John Klein of Canada was a wire-to-wire winner in the Net Division, while Richard Paiko of Davis, CA accomplished the same feat in the Senior Division. Trailing Klein by three points was Murray Felzer of Pennsylvania, and runner-up behind Paiko in the Senior Division was Mark Miller of Antioch, CA.
