Washington Women take down Heavyweights at Northrop-Grumman

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. -- Mary Lou Mulflur picked up her 42nd title as coach of the Washington Huskies Tuesday. It's hard to imagine too many wins being as impressive as this one considering the quality of teams they beat including USC, Duke, UCLA, and Alabama. Washington shot a 3-round total of 858 (6-over par) at Palos Verdes Golf Club to beat Alabama by six shots. In addition, Washington beat USC by 19 shots and Duke and UCLA by 20. The Huskies were led by senior Charlotte Thomas who posted a final round 70 (1-under) to finish 1-under par for the tournament and tie for 2nd. Senior Ying Luo and freshman Julianne Alvarez also played exceptionally well, finishing in a tie for fourth at 1-over par. The Huskies also received a huge boost from freshamn Wenyung Keh who aced the 162-yard 15th to post 2-over 73. Her coach was there to bear witness and was thrilled to say the least. “Wenyung’s shot was just unbelievable." Mulfur told UW Athletics. "She hit the ball from the left and it probably dropped two feet in front of the hole and went right in, such an amazing thing to witness.” The individual title was won by Arizona State junior Monica Vaughn who shot the round of the tournament by three shots, a scorching final-round 65. Vaughn tallied an impressive seven birdies to climb up six spots and win by three shots at 4-under par.
