Warne takes lead at Monterey Bay

Santa Rosa's Steven Warne has a two stroke lead and is on track to win his first amateurgolf.com tour event

SEASIDE, Calif. (May 26, 2012) – The 12th annual amateurgolf.com Monterey Bay Championship got underway today at the Blackhorse Golf Course at Bayonet-Blackhorse which will be hosting the 2012 PGA Professional National Championship next month. As the raingear and umbrellas came out to battle the rain and cold, Steven Warne of Santa Rosa fired a 1-over-par 73 and holds a two stroke lead over defending champion Jered Stone of Tarzana, CA who shot 75. Danny Ro of Alameda is three off the pace with a 76. Warne, a member of the Santa Rosa Country Club and a player on the Sonoma State men’s golf team is playing in his ninth amateurgolf.com tournament. His best finish was two years ago where he finished T3 for this event. In the net division, 2009 champion Andrew Loftus of Salinas, CA posted a 1-under-par 71 and sits four ahead of Korsen Yu of Sunnyvale who shot a net 75. Matt Romig of Los Gatos is in third with a 76. The second and final round will be played on the challenging Bayonet Course tomorrow.
