Virginia, Lauren Coughlin sweep ACC Women's Titles

UVA repeats and Lauren Coughlin accomplishes career goal at Sedgefield Country Club

GREENSBORO, NC (April 17, 2016)--Three Virginia players finished in the top-5 including Individual champion senior Lauren Coughlin (-9) as the Cavilers repeated as ACC champions. Virginia (855) won by 11 over second place Wake Forest (866) and bettered third place Duke (883) by 18. "I'm thrilled to death. So happy," Virginia head coach Kim Lewellen said after play was concluded. "For my first-years to do what they did, I'm obviously excited for all of my veterans and Lauren Coughlin in particular for medalist, but to have my first years do what they did is exciting for the future of the program. I'm thrilled with the whole team effort to do what we did to win this championship." In order to win ACC medalist honors Coughlin needed some final hole heroics. Coughlin began Sedgefield Country Club's 18th hole tied for the lead with Wake Forest freshman Jennifer Kupcho. After a drive of almost 300 yards on the par-5 closing hole Coughlin knocked her second shot to within seven feet. From there Coughlin was able to two-putt for the birdie and when Kupcho bogeyed the title was hers. "I love the golf course," Lauren Coughlin said. "Last year I had a very good game plan and so I stayed with it. I was hitting the ball really well coming into this week and I was able to hit it well throughout the tournament and I was putting really well. It all came together, all at the right time." The other Cavs to finish top-5 were junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (-2) in fourth and freshman Anna Redding (E) T5. -Virginia athletics contributed to this story
