USGA Public Links - LIVE scoring

The USGA Public Links may be doomed to extinction, but this year's event is going strong - on the site of a former prison

LORTON, Virginia (July 15, 2013) -- Follow the stroke play qualifying portion of the USGA Public Links Championship as it takes place in Lorton, Virginia's Laurel Hill Golf Club.

Noteworthy players include Cameron Peck - fresh off a victory in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Amateur at Bandon Dunes, who got off to a 1-under start on the front nine after teeing off early.

The Public Links typically attracts a more diverse field than other USGA amateur championships, as it is only open to players who do not hold playing privileges at a private golf club. This year's field includes players of all ages and all walks of life, from and iron worker to a dentist and everything in between.

They all have the game to qualify for this event, and some, like PNGA champ Cameron Peck or Sean Knapp of Pennsylvania, a 3-time Pennsylvania Public Links winner who just played in the US Senior Open, are fresh off a recent tournament.

The player with the most experience in the Public Links? That would be Glenn Przybylski, 46, of Frankfort, Ill. He is playing in his 8th.

ABOUT LAUREL HILL GOLF CLUB

Designer Bill Love, whose credits include the Iron Forge Course at Penn National and Hunting Hawk in Glenn Allen, Virginia, has created an impressive 18-hole course on land that formerly housed the D.C. Department of Corrections facility at Lorton. Paying homage to the early architects of American golf, Love's objective was to let the natural beauty of the property dictate the character of the course.
