U.S. Women's Open: Minjee Lee 2 shots off lead

Australian amateur Minjee Lee shot 1-under 69 and is tied for 3rd place at Pinehurst No. 2

PINEHURST, N.C. (June 19, 2014) -- With 25 amateurs competing in the U.S. Women's Open, it's no surprise that the group was a major part of the story Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2. If the play of Australia's Minjee Lee continues, amateur golfers may very well be part of the storyline on Sunday, too. Lee shot a 1-under 69 Thursday and sits tied for third place and just two shots behind leader Stacy Lewis. Lee, who won the U.S. Junior Girls title in 2012 before winning back-to-back Australian Women's Amateur titles, won the Oates Victorian Open -- a professional event earlier this year. The race for low amateur honors, however, isn't a one-golfer show. Canada's Brooke Mackenzie Henderson shot a 1-over 71 on Thursday, continuing the stellar play that won her the Women's Porter Cup last week at Niagara Falls Country Club. Paige Lee, Chisato Hashimoto and Marissa Chow are all at 3-over 73 and tied for 35th place after Day 1 at the U.S. Women's Open. Lucy Li, the 11-year-old qualifier from California, managed an 8-over 78 in Round 1. Play for Round 1 was suspended at 7:55 p.m. with the round set to complete beginning at 6:45 a.m. on Friday.
