U.S. Women's Open: Henderson tops Lee for low amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. (June 22, 2014) -- Throughout the week, it appeared the low amateur crown at the 2014 U.S. Open was all but decided. Australia's Minjee Lee led the race from the start and was tied for third place overall heading into Sunday's finale. It all seemed decided until Canada's Brooke Mackenzie Henderson shot a final-round 1-under 69 at Pinehurst No. 2 to slide into a tie for 10th place and the low amateur crown. Henderson finished seven shots back of winner Michelle Wie. Lee, the two-time reigning Australian Women's Amateur champion and a recent winner in a professional event, stumbled to a 6-over 76 in Sunday's final round and fell to a tie for 22nd place. Henderson continued her stellar play this week at Pinehurst. She entered the event just a few days after winning the Women's Porter Cup title with a closing round 63. France's Mathilda Cappeliez (T59), reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion Emma Talley (T63), Japan's Chisato Hashimoto (68th) and American Andrea Lee (T69) rounded out the final amateurs that made the weekend cut.
