MADISON, Mississippi (August 10, 2017) -- Blake Tomlinson of Salt Lake City captured the rain-shortened Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship Boys Division title on Thursday after firing a four-under-par 69-71—140, winning the event by just one stroke.
Tomlinson says he had a rough start but was able to scramble well enough to capture the championship. The University of Utah commit carded three birdies and two bogeys in his final round.
“I started out rough on the first four holes but I knew I could get it back so I did my best,” Tomlinson said. This is Tomlinson’s top finish in a national championship noting the win as “feeling so great!”
Carter Pendley (2019) of Dalton, Ga., and Cameron Clarke (2017) of Pittsboro, Miss., rose to second, finishing with matching scores of 72-69—141. Jacob Bridgeman (2018) of Inman, S.C., and AJ Teraoka (2018) of Honolulu, Hawaii finished fourth with a total score of one-under.
In the Girls Division, second-round play was completed yesterday with Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., finishing her second and final round of the Allendale GC hosted 72-hole tournament turned to 36. Hawkins was able to build on her lead on Wednesday, winning the event by five, shooting 70-71=141.
Boys played the Annandale Golf Club at 7,074 yards and a 70.0/113 course rating while the girls played at 6,183 yards and a course rating of 76.6/136.
