Texas S. Mid-Am: Soerries takes lead

Tony Soerries, of Spring, is the new leader of the South Mid-Amateur Championship after the completion of Saturday’s second round

(Houston, TX) – Tony Soerries, of Spring, is the new leader of the South Mid-Amateur Championship after the completion of Saturday’s second round. Soerries leads after 36 holes at 1-under par 143. CLUB CHAMPION is the presenting sponsor for the second regional championship of the season at Houston’s Sterling Country Club.

Shaun Helmle of Seabrook, who lead after the first round with score of 3-under par 69, had another good round in today’s championship shooting 3-over par 75 bringing his 36-hole total to 144 which puts him in 2nd place at even par.

Ryan Clarke and Chris Causey, both of Houston, as well as Pasadena’s Broc Haymon all had notable round 2 scores, as they were the only competitors in the field other than the leader Soerries to shoot even par or better. Clarke sits in 3rd place with a 36-hole total of 1-over par 145. Causey jumped three spots up the leader board to put sole possession of 4th place with a 36-hole total of 2-over par 146.

The final round of the 54-hole stroke play competition will begin Sunday at 8:00AM off of holes #1 and #10. Sunday’s round has the makings of an exciting finish with ten players sitting seven shots or better of Soerries. Players will be looking to position themselves for South Regional Player of the Year points as well as claim the title of South Mid-Amateur Champion.
