After taking a slim first-round lead at the Farm Golf Club, Tennessee entered the final round tied with host Georgia Tech. The two teams battled all day and finished regulation with identical rounds of 1-under 287. That left both teams tied at 21 under for the tournament, and forced a team playoff. Tennessee won on the first extra hole.
"I am very proud of these guys,” Webb said. “They had a stressful summer but they came to campus open minded and ready to get to work and since day one. They could not have impressed me more with their desire and work ethic. I am glad they got to experience today and see that they can play with any team in the country. They earned this all by themselves and I could not be happier for them."
Winning the Georgia Tech-hosted event is a little bit fitting considering that Webb was an assistant to Georgia Tech head coach Bruce Heppler from 2012-15 before becoming the head coach for three years at Middle Tennessee State. His assistant coach is former Yellow Jacket Bo Andrews (2010-14).
Alabama, a team that lost this event in a playoff with Georgia Tech a year ago, was third at 19 under. Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer, who led entering the final round of last spring’s NCAA Championship only to finish T-7, was the individual medalist with a 10-under 206 total. Nimmer closed the event with a final-round 7-under 65. Alabama’s Davis Riley, runner-up at the Western Amateur, and Tennessee’s Jake Meenhorst tied for second at 9 under.
