South Carolina Mid-Am: Bearden Sets Tournament Record

GREENVILLE, S.C. (October 7, 2018) - Kyle Bearden shot a final-round 67 to finish at 15-under-par 198 to claim a four shot victory in the South Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship at Greenville Country Club’s Riverside Course.

Bearden’s three day total of 198 becomes the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship record, topping Todd White’s tournament total of 199 at the Oldfield Club in 2004.

Bearden began his day with a two shot lead and once he teed up on the first hole, he never looked back. After three birdies on his front nine, Bearden showed a steady hand with one birdie and eight pars on the back nine to complete his dominant victory.

Florence’s Jon Weiss made a brilliant surge on the final round after beginning his day five shots behind the leader, shooting a final round low score of 66 to catapult himself into a solo second place finish. Finishing alone in third place was Brent Delahoussaye who, despite four bogeys in his round, kept his composure to rebound with five birdies for a final round score of 70 and a tournament total of 10-under 203.

Robert Lutomski of Simpsonville, who is currently in 8th place in the SCGA Player of the Year Standings and one half of the 2018 SCGA Partners Champion team, finished in fourth place after final round of 69.

DAY TWO RECAP

Kyle Bearden proved consistent during the second round of the 37th South Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship after firing a second round score of 5-under-par 66 to take a two-shot lead heading into the final round on Sunday at Greenville Country Club’s Riverside Course.

Beginning his day with a two-shot deficit, Bearden stood on the 10th tee hoping to gain ground on first round leader, Danny Brock. With only a lone birdie on the par-4 11th hole during his front nine, Bearden continued to fight adding a birdie on the par-4 3rd hole and caught “lightning in a bottle” on holes six through nine to rack up four consecutive birdies to finish his second round with a 66.

Trailing two shots behind Bearden is former PGA Tour Golfer, Brent Delahoussaye, who shot respectable rounds of 65 and 68 for a two-day total of 133. First-round leader Danny Brock (Simpsonville), Eddie Hargett (Blythewood), and Robert Lutomski (Simpsonville) are tied for 3rd place after posting two-day totals of 135. The defending champion, Josh Branyon, sits at one-under par 141 heading into the final round.

The final round of the championship will begin Sunday at 8.00 a.m. off of both #1 and #10 tees.

DAY ONE RECAP

A beautiful day of sunshine and warmth greeted the 132 man field at the opening round of the 37th SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Greenville Country Club’s Riverside Course.

Playing in the morning wave of the championship, Danny Brock of Simpsonville looked to set the pace early for the first round. With one eagle and 6 birdies on his first 11 holes, Brock looked to have full control of the course until a lone bogey on the par-3 13th Hole. After losing one stroke, Brock regrouped to add one more birdie on his back nine to catapult himself into the lead with an opening round of 8 under par 63.

One shot back of Brock is one half of the 2018 SCGA Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championship team, Jon Weiss of Florence. Weiss accumulated 5 birdies throughout his round of 64 along with an ace on the Par 3 – 138 yard second hole. Brent Delahoussaye (Greenville) and Kyle Bearden (Barnwell) are two shots back of the leader with Stephen Poole (Aiken) and Greenville Country Club Member Garland Ferrell (Greenville) three shots back after opening rounds of 67.

There are a total of 28 total players under par including Walt Todd – one half of the 2018 SCGA Four-Ball Champion team – of Laurens who is five shots off the pace after a three under par round of 68.

The Second round of the Championship will begin at 8.00 a.m. off of both #1 and #10 tees.
