Choudrant, La. (October 7, 2015) – Christina Proteau has seen her fortunes change over the week of the US Women’s Mid-Am. After posting a 15-over 87 on the first day of stroke play, she rebounded with an even-par 72 and then has gone on to win her next four matches to make it to the semis.
Today’s morning match against Paige Bromen was a tough one, as Bromen won holes 14,15 and 16 to bring their match to all square. Proteau won the match in 20 holes.
She’ll face fourth-seeded Margaret Shirley of Roswell, Ga., who won over Ashley Tonore from nearby Monroe, La. 3 & 2 on Wednesday morning. Shirley won the second hole of the match with a par on no. 2 and held her position for most of the afternoon. Another par on no. 16 was all she needed to win the match 3 & 2 and advance to the semifinals.
Oakton, Va. resident and second seeded Lauren Greenlief faced an international opponent in Mercedes Huarte of Argentina. The match started with Huarte winning the first hole before Greenlief brought the match back to square with a birdie on the par-3 third.
Greenlief took the lead with a par on the 6th hole to go 1-up and on a couple of occasions had a 2-up lead, but Huarte stayed close and battled back square the match on 13. Back-to-back wins on holes 14 and 15 put Greenlief in the lead again, this time for good, and she finished with a 1-up win.
Greenlief faces a hot Whitney Britton from Laguna Niguel, Cal., in the semi finals. Britton faced the other Louisianan remaining in the field, Kay Daniel from Covington. Britton went up early and cruised to a 5 & 4 win, losing only two holes the entire match.
Further updates to come.
