Scott McNeil hangs on to win Philadelphia Mid-Amateur

WAYNE, Pa. — An opening-round 68 paved the way for Scott McNeil to win the Philadelphia Mid-Amateur at St. Davids Golf Club by one. McNeil was being chased by Jeff Osberg and four-time champion Michael McDermott, and bogeyed his final two holes en route to a three-over par 75 on Thursday, but still managed to take home the title in his third try. Prior to Thursday's win, NcNeil best finish at the tournament was a tenth place tie in 2012. “[It’s a] great feeling. [I’ve put in] lots of hard work early on in the season [and] I’m glad it has finally paid off,” McNeil told the Golf Association of Philadelphia. “I’ve been close before, but for once I put myself in good position and [was] able to drive the bus rather than riding in the back of it and looking to get to the front of it.” Both Osberg and McDermott posted final-round 69s, with Osberg taking solo second place and McDermott tying for third with Michael Carr. Carr was alone in second place after a 71 on Wednesday, but got off to a rough start in round two, going four-over in his first seven holes to eventually shoot 74. Defending champion Peter Barron III tied for 33rd place with rounds of 76 and 77.
