San Diego County: Chung, Neale lead at 71

At Arnold Palmer's only Southern California designed course, Yoon Chung and Gordon Neale lead after round 1

CARLSBAD, Calif. (January 3, 2014) -- Call it amateurgolf.com's "local" tournament. At just 3 miles from our Carlsbad HQ, we love playing Aviara and this first Friday in January 85 players found that living on the "left coast" sure beats the weather on the opposite side of the U.S. Gordon Neale and Yoon Chung both fired 71 to take the early lead with Niles Wright just a shot back at 72. The round of the day, however, came in the small Women's division, where Haley Moore of Escondido fired 4-under 68 to take a 6 shot lead into the final round. Moore, starting on the 1st hole, closed her front nine with a pair of birdies to shoot 35, then really caught fire on the more difficult back nine, posting a 33 with an unbelievable finish that included a double eagle on the par-5 17th and birdie on challenging 18th. In the Net Division, Dorothy Donnelly and Rich McDaniel lead at 70, while Don Eklund (who at the beginning of the day said he wasn't sure about his game) fired a gross 70 to take a four shot lead over Steve Donnelly (74) to lead the seniors. Tomorrow's round is an 8:30am shotgun start.
