SAN ANTONIO, TX (6-27-15) – Just when he was in cruise control at the San Antonio Amateur, Austin Wylie ran into a buzz saw on the 429-yard par-4 12th hole at Republic Golf Club. After an eagle on no. 11, Wylie doubled nos. 12 and 13, then proceeded to bogey the next two holes.
But Wylie righted the ship with birdies on nos. 16 and 18 to finish the round with an even-par 71 after his 3-under 68 yesterday. Wylie, a rising senior at the University of the Incarnate Word and from Boerne, TX, enters Sunday’s final round with a 2-stroke lead over Chris Massoletti.
Massoletti’s day was much less of a roller coaster, with one birdie on his front nine and two on the back, to go along with a double bogey on the 16th. He finished his second round with a 1-under par 70 after an up-and-down day on Friday that saw him escape with an even-par 71.
Kyle Bailey and Edward Sanchez both fired 2-under 69s and tied for the low round of the day. Bailey stands tied for fourth and Sanchez is tied for eighth going into Sunday’s final round.
Greater San Antonio Amateur Championships
Every year Golf San Antonio offers ten amateur golf championships for residents of Bexar and adjacent counties. The Regional Championship is open to any resident of the state of Texas. In addition, Golf San Antonio hosts the Regional AJGA Championship in the summer and a Ryder Cup event, the Rudy's I-35 Cup Presented by Ameritas in November. The Rudy's I-35 Cup will take place in San Antonio for 2015.
