Samuel wins Canadian Senior

Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont. has won the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (Aug. 24, 2012) -- Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont. has won the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Despite a double bogey on the first hole, Samuel recovered with six birdies and a single bogey for a final round tally of 3-under par 71 and a tournament total of 2-over par 224. “[Today’s round] started poorly, I four-putted the first green, but after that I started putting really well. I haven’t putted well all week so finally some of the putts started going in and I hit the ball really well, so that was good,” said Samuel. “I’ve never won a Canadian event, I’ve won provincial, but I’ve never won a Canadian so that’s why it’s a nice win.” Samuel came in third place at last year’s Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship. With this win, Samuel earns a spot in the 2012 USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, which will take place in Hershey, Penn. from September 8-13. Helene Chartrand of Pincourt, Que. finished a single shot behind Samuel in second place at 3-over par 225. Chartrand had four birdies on the back nine for an even par 74 on the day. In third spot is Mary Kay Thanos-Zordani of Chicago, who finished at 5-over par 227. She had three birdies and four bogeys on the day for a final round total of 1-over par 75. Defending champion Mary Ann Hayward of Aurora, Ont. ended up in fourth place at 8-over par 230. In a three-way tie for fifth position, first and second round leader Lynn Kuehn of Lacombe, Alta., Alison Murdoch of Victoria, and Super Senior (60+ years) division champion Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, B.C. finished at 10-over par 232.
