Samuel Mangiaterra shoots 65 to lead Las Vegas City Amateur

A former high-school football player turned golfer leads the Las Vegas City Amateur after five-under 65 in opening round

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 1, 2014) — After 18 holes at the Las Vegas City Amateur, Samuel Mangiaterra leads by two shots after posting five-under 65 at Las Vegas Golf Club on Saturday. The former Oak Hills High School (Hesperia, Calif.) football player is now a freshman at Citrus College in Azusa, Calif. hoping to transfer to a four-year college eventually. Mangiaterra has never picked up a golf club until three-and-a-half years ago, according to the Victorville Daily Press. Two players are tied for second place at 67, including Kenny Ebalo and Ryan McCoullough. Five players are tied for fourth at 69 and overall, 14 players are at even-par or better. Prolific senior amateur Brady Exber, who has captured multiple championships in 2014 including the Azalea Senior Invitational and Stocker Cup, is one of six players tied for ninth place at even-par 70.
