FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Samantha Smolen kicked off the stroke play portion of the Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur with a tournament-leading 73 on Monday to earn the No. 1 seed heading into match play.
The top eight seeds received byes in the round-of-32, which took place on Tuesday. Wednesday's round-of-16 will begin in the morning at Coral Ridge Country Club with Smolen facing 12-year-old Casey Weidenfeld.
Two players shot 74 on Monday, including LSU sophomore Carly Ray Goldstein and junior golfer Rinko Mitsunaga. Goldstein will square off with 15-year-old Julia Matzat while Mitsunaga will match up with Danielle Proctor.
The tournament is the last of three major women's amateur events being played in Florida in the the month of January, with the Harder Hall Invitational and South Atlantic Amateur taking place over the last two weeks.
