Sally: Henderson holds onto lead

Brooke Henderson came back to the field Thursday in the second round of the South Atlantic Amateur, but the Canadian teen still leads the women's event

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2014) -- Brooke Henderson came back to the field Thursday in the second round of the South Atlantic Amateur, but the Canadian teen still leads the women's event. Henderson, 16, of Smiths Falls, Ontario, and a member of the Canadian national team, struggled to a 4-over 76 at Oceanside Country Club. But after her sterling first-round 67, in which she reeled off six birdies in a seven-hole stretch, Henderson, the seventh-ranked player in the Golfweek Junior Rankings, holds a one-shot lead after 36 holes. What a difference 24 hours made for Henderson, though. After making seven birdies – including a 6-under stretch on holes 9 through 15 at Oceanside – in the first round, she struggled with six bogeys against two birdies in the second round. Henderson, the reigning Canadian Women's Amateur champion, made two cuts in LPGA events last year, finishing T-35 in the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic and T-59 in the U.S. Women's Open. Wales' Chloe Williams, on the strength of an eagle-3 on the sixth hole, played her way into contention with a 3-under 69 and 144 total. England's Annabel Dimmock and Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., are tied for third at 145 after each shot a second-round 70. The 72-hole event, the third of five tournaments on the Orange Blossom Tour, concludes Saturday.
