BLYTHEWOOD, SC (June 16, 2012) -- Jon Weiss, a 19 year old sophomore on the Newberry College golf team is the comeback kid. First, he birdied six of his last eight holes to advance to match play. Next he birdied three of the last four in round one to send three time SC Match-Play champion Todd White packing.
In the quarterfinals against Ben Fogler, he was one down with two to go and won both for the one-up win. In the semifinals against Parker Allen he again found himself one down with two to go and won the last two for another one-up win. Matt Laydon, a 37 year old financial advisor from Charleston, like Weiss, barely made it to match play.
Matt went 19 holes in his first match, won 1 up in his second, 2 & 1 in the quarterfinals and destroyed Hayden Letien 7 & 6 in the semifinals.
“I got a couple of good breaks early while Hayden had a few bad ones. When I birdied the 9th from the 10th fairway it took the fight out of Letien,” said Laydon.
The only other non-collegian to make it to the quarterfinals was former Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Walter Todd from Laurens. The 51 year old Todd “ran out of gas against the youngsters. He fell 5 & 4 to USC Aiken golfer Hayden Letien. The championship match will start at 8 am Sunday and will be 18 holes.
