(September 8, 2016) -- With the 2017 Walker Cup at Los Angeles Country Club a year away, the Royal and Ancient announced that Royal Liverpool will host the 2019 version on September 7th and 8th. When the Walker Cup heads to Royal Liverpool in three years time it will mark the second time the venue has hosted the event.
Royal Liverpool first hosted the biennial matches between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland in 1983, with the U.S. winning 13.5-10.5. The matches will also help Royal Liverpool celebrate its 150th anniversary.
The club, which is part of the British Open rota has had a long history with the amateur game, including hosting the first British Amateur in 1885 and the first international matches between the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland in 1921. Those matches led to the establishment of the Walker Cup.
The announcement came on Thursday as the R&A announced seven host sites for 2019 championships and international matches.
When the Walker Cup matches head to Los Angeles Country Club next year for the 46th playing the U.S. will be looking to avenge a 16.5-9.5 defeat in 2015 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club.
