Romo, at 8 over for 36 holes, was 10 shots away from making the cut but only four shots away from the bottom of the leaderboard.
For Romo, the eagle on the seventh hole in Thursday’s opening round was promising as he continues to chase a level of play that would allow him to compete on the PGA Tour.
Despite trailing the cutline by so many shots, and being more than a longshot going in, Romo drew big crowds in Dallas.
“It was fantastic. It was really enjoyable,” he said of the crowds. “I could feel the energy and just feel them pulling for you. Made me feel good inside. Nice gesture by the fans today.”
Romo played a handful of amateur events last summer – including Wisconsin state and regional events as well as the prestigious Western Amateur – and also made it through the prequalifying stage of Web.com Tour Q-School.
