The field was divided into East and West divisions, with each team playing three matches and earning points for match wins. At the end of three matches (the third match was shortened to 9 holes due to morning fog on the Ocean Course), Michigan State and Purdue had the best records and earned their way into the title match.
In other matches Iowa beat Maryland to finish 9th, with Northwestern over Rutgers in the 11th-place match and Nebraska over Michigan in the 13th-place match.
