WILMINGTON, Del. (June 9, 2013) -- The U.S.
Palmer Cup squad didn't
take its collective foot off the gas on Sunday
at the Wilmington Golf Club,
securing the title behind more dominating play
in a 20.5-9.5 thrashing of
Europe.
While the U.S. was challenged more on
Sunday -- they won the foursomes
and singles sessions by a score of 10-5 -- it
was decided early in the
afternoon singles, needing only 1.5 points to
take the title.
A day after a trio of Alabama standouts
accounted for 5.5 points, the Tide's
Justin Thomas, Cory Whitsett and Bobby
Wyatt
accounted for four more
points on Sunday.
Thomas was undefeated over the two days,
with a halve in the Sunday
foursomes play his only blemish.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers was also flawless
in his four matches over the
weekend, picking up 3.5 points.
Europe was led by Kevin Phelan over the two
days, including an impressive
halve with Wyatt in the afternoon's first
singles match. Phelan accounted
for two points -- a win and two halves -- in
four matches.
