Ouimet Memorial: Whelan takes lead

Past champion Jack Whelan of St. Lawrence University posted a 4-under 65 Wednesday at Dedham Country & Polo Club to take the early lead at the 47th playing of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament

DEDHAM, Mass. (July 30, 2014) -- Past champion Jack Whelan of St. Lawrence University posted a 4-under 65 Wednesday at Dedham Country & Polo Club to take the early lead at the 47th playing of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. The prestigious 54-hole event, which hosts New England's top players each year and goes to fund the Ouimet Scholarship Fund, will move to Wellesley Country Club Thursday before wrapping up Friday at the Donald Ross-designed Woodland Country Club in Newton. Whelan had four birdies and no bogeys in his round with just 27 putts which included several key par saves. The 65 tied his competitive low score. I’m feeling good about my game now,” he said in a press release. Whelan, who won the event in 2012, is three shots up on Patrick Frodigh, Mike Dunham and Jeff Lang. -Information from Ouimet.org was used in this report
