SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 24, 2014) — This year's San Jose City Championship did not have the drama of a playoff, like last year, but there was some great scoring. The University of California-Davis was well represented by the champion, Nicolas Noya, who is a redshirt sophomore, and incoming junior college transfer Patrick Soli, who was runner-up.
Noya and Soli battled throughout the round, with Noya's lead ranging from one to three strokes through the first 10 holes. Soli closed it to the final margin of one stroke with a par on hole 15, but Noya held onto the lead in the final three holes.
Noya, from South San Francisco, opened the event with a 65 on Saturday, closing with a 70 on Sunday at Santa Teresa Golf Course. Soli, a native of San Carlos, went 67-69 en route to his second place finish.
The second round was highlighted by the tournament low round of seven-under 64 by Trevor Clayton of Clovis. Clayton's 64 included nine birdies and two bogeys. It also tied the tournament single round record set by 2010 and 2011 champion Brent Booth during round two of the 2011 event.
Clayton's low round jumped him from being 10 shots back into a tie for third place, four shots off the lead. The senior flight was won in comeback fashion as Steve Donnelly of Salinas came from seven strokes off of the pace to win with rounds of 76 and 74.
